The Story of Adam and Eve

The Story of Adam and Eve (From the Qur’an)

Before humans existed, God created the heavens, the earth, and everything in them. The earth was empty of people, and God decided to create a new being who would live on earth and take care of it.

The Creation of Adam

God told the angels,
“I am going to create a human being from earth.”

The angels were surprised and asked,
“Will You create someone who will cause harm and shed blood, while we worship You and praise You?”

God replied,
“I know what you do not know.”

God then created Adam, the first human, from clay made of earth. When Adam’s body was complete, God breathed into him a soul. Adam became alive, able to think, learn, and speak.

God taught Adam the names and knowledge of many things. Then God showed Adam to the angels and asked them to name those things. The angels said,
“We only know what You have taught us.”

This showed that Adam had special knowledge given by God.

The Command to the Angels

God commanded the angels to bow down to Adam as a sign of respect—not worship. All the angels obeyed, except one being named Iblis.

Iblis was made from fire, not clay like Adam. He was proud and jealous. He said,
“I am better than him. You created me from fire and created him from clay.”

Because of his pride and disobedience, God removed Iblis from His mercy. Iblis then promised that he would try to mislead humans and turn them away from God.

The Creation of Eve

Adam lived alone at first. God created Eve as his companion so he would not be lonely. Adam and Eve were placed in Paradise, a beautiful garden with peace, food, and comfort.

God told them:
“Live here freely and eat from whatever you wish, but do not approach this one specific tree. If you do, you will be doing wrong.”

Adam and Eve lived happily and peacefully. They did not feel hunger, fear, or sadness.

The Temptation

Iblis was angry that Adam had been honored. He whispered to Adam and Eve, trying to trick them. He said things like:

“God only stopped you from this tree so you won’t live forever or become like angels.”

He kept whispering lies and promises until Adam and Eve became weak and curious. Eventually, they ate from the forbidden tree.

As soon as they did, they realized they had disobeyed God. They felt shame and regret.

Repentance and Forgiveness

Adam and Eve immediately turned to God and said:

“Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy on us, we will surely be lost.”

God accepted their repentance. He is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful.

However, God told them that Paradise was not their permanent home yet. He said they would go down to earth, where humans would live, be tested, and follow guidance sent by God.

God also promised:

  • Guidance would come to humanity

  • Those who follow God’s guidance will not be afraid or sad

  • Those who turn away will face consequences

Life on Earth

Adam and Eve went to earth and began human life. Adam became the first prophet, teaching people about God, worship, and good behavior.

From Adam and Eve came all human beings. Their story teaches important lessons:

  • Pride leads to failure (like Iblis)

  • Humans can make mistakes

  • God forgives those who sincerely repent

  • Life is a test, but God always provides guidance
