The Story of Noah (Nūḥ)

 (According to the Qur’an)

Who Was Prophet Noah?

Prophet Noah, called Nūḥ in Arabic, was one of the earliest prophets sent by Allah. He was sent to guide people who had forgotten how to worship Allah alone.

Allah says:

“Indeed, We sent Noah to his people.”
(Qur’an 71:1)

Noah was chosen because he was patient, honest, and faithful to Allah.

Noah’s People Worship False Gods

Noah’s people began to worship idols instead of Allah. They prayed to statues and named false gods such as Wadd, Suwāʿ, Yaghūth, Yaʿūq, and Nasr.

Allah commanded Noah to warn them.

Noah said:

“O my people, worship Allah. You have no god other than Him.”
(Qur’an 7:59)

He reminded them that Allah:

Created them

Gave them food and water

Controlled the sky and earth

Noah Warns His People Patiently

Noah did not give up easily. He preached for a very long time.

Allah says:

“He remained among them for a thousand years minus fifty years.”
(Qur’an 29:14)

That means Noah preached for 950 years.

He invited them:

Day and night

In public and in private

Gently and clearly

Noah said:

“I called my people night and day, but my call only made them run farther away.”
(Qur’an 71:5–6)

The People Reject Noah

Despite Noah’s patience, most people refused to believe. They:

Mocked him

Covered their ears

Called him crazy

Said he was only a human like them

They said:

“We see you only as a man like us.”
(Qur’an 11:27)

Only a small number of people believed in Noah.

This teaches us that truth is not measured by numbers.

Noah Prays to Allah

After centuries of rejection, Noah turned to Allah for help.

He said:

“My Lord, I have been defeated, so help me.”
(Qur’an 54:10)

Allah answered Noah’s prayer.

Allah told him that his people would be punished because they refused guidance and continued to do wrong.

Allah Commands Noah to Build the Ark

Allah commanded Noah to build a large ship (ark).

“Build the ship under Our eyes and according to Our revelation.”
(Qur’an 11:37)

Noah had never built a ship before, but he trusted Allah and obeyed.

As he built the ark, the people mocked him:

“They ridiculed him whenever they passed by him.”
(Qur’an 11:38)

Noah replied calmly that soon they would know the truth.

The Flood Begins

Allah told Noah that when water began to flow from the earth, it would be the sign to enter the ark.

Allah says:

“We opened the gates of the sky with pouring rain, and We caused the earth to burst with springs.”
(Qur’an 54:11–12)

The flood was powerful and overwhelming.

Animals and Believers Enter the Ark

Allah commanded Noah:

“Carry on it two of each kind and your family—except those against whom the word has already gone forth—and those who believe.”
(Qur’an 11:40)

Noah took:

The believers

Pairs of animals

His family, except those who disbelieved

Noah’s Son Refuses to Believe

One of Noah’s sons did not believe. When the flood came, Noah called out to him:

“O my son, come aboard with us and do not be with the disbelievers.”
(Qur’an 11:42)

But his son replied:

“I will take refuge on a mountain to protect me from the water.”
(Qur’an 11:43)

Noah warned him:

“There is no protection today from the command of Allah.”
(Qur’an 11:43)

The waves separated them, and Noah’s son drowned.

This shows that faith, not family ties, saves a person.

The Flood Ends

After Allah’s command was fulfilled, the flood ended.

Allah said:

“O earth, swallow your water, and O sky, withhold your rain.”
(Qur’an 11:44)

The water went down, and the ark rested on Mount Judi.

Noah Thanks Allah

Noah prayed to Allah with gratitude:

“My Lord, forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer.”
(Qur’an 71:28)

Allah saved Noah and the believers because of their faith and patience.
