Called by Name: The Twelve Sent Out

From the Crowd to the Calling

Many people followed Jesus Christ.

They listened.
They watched.
They were amazed.

But among the many, there came a moment when He chose a few—twelve men who would be set apart for a special purpose.

This calling is recorded across Gospel of Matthew 10, Gospel of Mark 3:13–19, and Gospel of Luke 6:12–16.

This is not just a list of names.

👉 It is a story about calling, purpose, and transformation.

The Moment of Choosing

Before choosing the twelve, Jesus spends time in prayer.

This is important.

The decision is not rushed.
It is thoughtful and intentional.

Then He calls those He wants—and they come to Him.

Out of the many, twelve are appointed.

Not because they are perfect.
Not because they are the most qualified.

But because they are chosen.

The Twelve

These are the men called apostles:

  • Simon Peter

  • Andrew

  • James son of Zebedee

  • John the Apostle

  • Philip the Apostle

  • Bartholomew

  • Thomas the Apostle

  • Matthew

  • James son of Alphaeus

  • Thaddaeus

  • Simon the Zealot

  • Judas Iscariot

Twelve very different individuals.

Different backgrounds.
Different personalities.
Different stories.

And yet, brought together for one purpose.

Why Twelve?

The number twelve is not random.

It echoes something deeply meaningful:

  • The twelve tribes of Israel

  • A picture of completeness and foundation

By choosing twelve, Jesus is forming something new—like a renewed people, a restored community, a foundation for what is to come.

Called to Be With Him

Before they are sent out, they are first called to be with Him.

This matters.

👉 Relationship comes before responsibility.

They walk with Him.
They listen.
They observe.

They learn not just through teaching, but through presence.

Sent Out With Purpose

They are not only called—they are sent.

The word “apostle” means “one who is sent.”

They are given authority to:

  • Teach

  • Heal

  • Bring hope

  • Confront what is broken

This is not their own mission.

👉 It is a continuation of what they have seen.

An Unlikely Group

Look closely at the group:

  • Fishermen

  • A tax collector

  • A zealot (someone with strong political views)

People who would not normally work together.

And yet, they are united.

This shows something powerful:

👉 Purpose can bring together those who would otherwise remain divided.

Imperfect People, Real Struggles

These men are not flawless.

They will:

  • Doubt

  • Misunderstand

  • Argue

  • Fail

One will even betray.

And still—they are chosen.

This reminds us:

👉 Calling is not based on perfection.

It is based on willingness to follow and grow.

Transformation Over Time

At the moment of calling, they are still ordinary men.

They do not fully understand what lies ahead.

But over time, they are shaped:

  • Through experiences

  • Through challenges

  • Through learning

Transformation is not instant.

👉 It is a journey.

A Deeper Meaning of Calling

This moment teaches us that calling is:

Personal

Each one is called by name.

Intentional

No one is chosen by accident.

Purposeful

They are given a mission that goes beyond themselves.

A Message for Today

This story speaks into everyday life in meaningful ways.

When you feel ordinary

These were everyday people.

👉 Great purpose can begin in ordinary lives.

When you feel unqualified

They did not have all the answers.

👉 Growth happens along the way.

When differences feel too big

This group was diverse and sometimes divided.

👉 Unity can be built around shared purpose.

A Question to Reflect On

Think about this:

  • What does it mean to be called in your own life?

  • Where might you be invited to grow, serve, or step forward?

  • Are you waiting to feel “ready” before responding?

Final Reflection

The miracle is not just that twelve men were chosen.

The miracle is what they became over time.

From uncertainty to confidence.
From following to leading.
From learning to teaching others.

All because they responded to the call.

Closing Thought

Imagine hearing your name called.

Not because you are perfect.
Not because you have everything figured out.

But because you are chosen for something meaningful.

And then comes the invitation:

👉 Come.
👉 Walk.
👉 Learn.
👉 Be sent.

Because sometimes, the greatest transformation begins with a simple moment—

👉 When you hear your name… and choose to respond.

The Story : Background : The Israelites are threatened by the Assyrian army, led by General Holofernes , who is conquering lands under the orders of King Nebuchadnezzar. Judith's Faith and Plan : Judith is a widow who lives in Bethulia. She is known for her devotion to God and her wisdom. Upset that her fellow Israelites are ready to give up, she calls out the leaders for their lack of faith. She insists that God will save them but that they need to act.
